PRESS RELEASE

IT’S OFFICIAL!

GREAT WALTHAM VILLAGE NAMED ESSEX VILLAGE OF THE YEAR 2010

At last evening’s Annual General Meeting of the Rural Community Council of Essex Great Waltham was named as Essex Village of the Year. The competition sponsored by Essex and Suffolk Water attracted 56 villages throughout Essex to enter.

In announcing Great Waltham as the winner Nick Shuttleworth , the Director of the Rural Community Council of Essex spoke of the ethos of care in the local community and  the vibrant and flourishing community spirit. He spoke of the works of the Great Waltham Community Network which sought to enhance community life and social activity and referred to the number of activities which went on in the village.

He praised the Parish Council as being pro-active, involving the youth of the village in fund raising activities to provide equipment, and listening to the input of the school Councils.

He mentioned that the village had good communications and a sustainability policy.

The prize was awarded following a further visit to Great Waltham school by four judges who were given an insight to village life by representatives of a variety of aspects of the village and a team of four young pupils from the school who told the judges what they liked about Great Waltham and why they enjoyed living there.

For these and more reasons the top prize for the Essex Village of the Year was presented to a group of five representatives from Great Waltham village who collected a certificate and a cheque for £500.

I P Bradley

Clerk, Great Waltham Parish Council.

THE PARISH COUNCIL INVITES THE MEDIA TO THE EVENT TO PHOTOGRAPH, FILM OR BROADCAST THE EVENT

Whether you are a resident of Great Waltham, thinking of visiting or looking for a nice place to live, we hope you find something of interest and value here.
The Parish of Great Waltham is one of the largest in Essex in area,  covering approximately 2,488 hectares (6,147 acres), but with only 2,100 residents is not densely populated.  It consists of two villages - Great Waltham (also known as Church End), and Ford End, and four hamlets –  Howe Street, Littley Green, North End and Broads Green.  The parish is approximately 5km north to south, 3km west to east and at its most southerly is 7km from Chelmsford.

The major activity is agriculture although it employs very few people these days.  The majority of local workers commute to towns up to 40 miles away and to London.  The M11, the A12, the A130, the A131, the A120, Stansted Airport and Chelmsford station are not far away.

Please feel free to have a browse round this site and take a look at what living in this parish has to offer.   We hope that you enjoy your stay here and find it informative and light-hearted.  Contact us if you require any more information:-

Great Waltham Parish Plan  (Includes North End).  Parish Plan projects were initiated by the Government and encouraged through County Councils, as part of the nationwide drive to devolve decision-making to local levels, where appropriate.  Great Waltham Parish Council sponsored this Parish Plan; it being fundamental that the local Community should produce the document, using local consultation to identify the ideas and issues of concern to the residents of the Parish.  Like most community projects, the preparation of the Parish Plan depended upon local volunteers.  (This large file might take up to 30 seconds to download).

One of the key sources of information used in producing this plan was the Village Design Statement above
